The fall issue of TEN, the T E Newsmagazine, focuses on entertaiment, a complex subject that includes the entertainment industry itself and its products. The word has an incredibly rich history, including the Medieval Latin intertenere (to hold inside), which reflects the Indo-European root ten, meaning “stretch.” It is a fitting theme for this article, as entertainment has become so diversified that it can be adapted to a multitude of situations: from one person choosing a private entertainment from an enormous array of pre-recorded products; to a dinner party accompanied by music and dance; to a performance intended for thousands or even for a global audience.
