The law is a system of rules that a society develops to deal with crime, business agreements, and social relationships. It can also refer to a profession that involves advising people about the law, representing people in court, or giving decisions and punishments. A person who practices law is called a lawyer or attorney.
New laws are created in the legislative branch of the government through bills that senators and representatives introduce. They are then reviewed, debated, changed and voted on. Once they are approved by both houses of Congress, they become Public Laws (also known as Statutes), and are signed into effect by the President.
A bill is a formal proposal for new legislation that contains the text of the proposed law along with the rationale for its passage. It is identified by its sponsor and the name of the originating chamber in which it was introduced, as well as the numbering assigned to each of the proposals that are introduced in a given Congress.
Unless otherwise noted, the following legislation will go into effect on January 1, 2023.
This bill would amend the City’s data breach notification laws to make certain definitions consistent with State law. Specifically, the bill would require a City agency to promptly disclose any security breach that affects the private identifiable information of its employees and/or the general public.
Currently, corporations that cause ecological devastation through mining, oil drilling or other industrial-scale operations often only face financial penalties and are shielded from criminal prosecution under international law. This bill aims to change that by classifying the actions of such corporations as ecocide, which would put them in the same category as war crimes and provide a powerful deterrent.
In order to be impactful, fit-for-purpose technology must have a use case that addresses a material challenge. It cannot be the end goal in itself for “legal techies.” Instead, it must be part of a strategic plan whose end game is to improve customer/end-user experience and outcomes. This approach will transform the industry into a new delivery model that is focused on high net promoter scores and a desire to make more of an impact. It will be a collaboration between legal practitioners, “techies,” process/project managers and others.
