Founded in 1919 as the Illustrated Daily News by Joseph Medill Patterson, the New York Daily News is one of the oldest newspapers still in operation. During the 1920s, it was the first successful tabloid newspaper in the United States and became a major source of news, scandal, and entertainment in New York City. It was renowned for its large and prominent photographs, for intense city news coverage, and for celebrity gossip, classified ads, comics and a sports section.
The newspaper was a staunchly conservative Republican paper in the 1920s and 1930s, but it began to change its editorial position in the 1970s. By the 1990s it had become a moderately liberal alternative to its conservative sister paper, the New York Post, which remained the dominant newspaper in the city until the turn of the century.
In addition to its print publication, the New York Daily News has a large television and radio presence. The News owns WPIX (Channel 11) in New York City and its flagship radio station, WNYC. The News also has a number of regional bureaus in the city and a newspaper office at One Police Plaza.
A digital version of the paper is available on computers and mobile devices. It is a replica of the printed paper and includes a wide range of interactive features, including the ability to swipe quickly between pages and share stories with your friends.
