Entertaiment, from Middle English entretenement (“support, maintenance”), is a form of entertainment in which an individual or group is occupied with amusement or enjoyment. It may take many forms: from choosing a film, book, or CD for one’s own entertainment to entertaining thousands at a sporting event or a musical performance. Entertainments may be satirical, ceremonial, or celebratory. Many entertainments also have a serious intent, as in the case of a religious festival or an act of war. The emergence of technology as an important means of entertainment has resulted in the development of a wide range of familiar themes, images, and structures.
