The legal profession is always changing. New laws come into effect, old ones are repealed and strategies that worked one quarter may not work the next. This is especially true for law firms that are trying to be proactive in their approach to the business of offering legal services. One way they can do this is by working with what is known as “law new.” This concept can be hard to define, but it generally refers to the idea of creating legal strategies that are not found in standard practice and that can serve as a secondary focus for the firm’s primary law practice.
Providing notice to City agency employees and job applicants regarding student loan forgiveness programs.
This bill would require the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, in consultation with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), to prepare a notice for City agency employees and job applicants about federal and state student loan forgiveness programs. DCWP would then make the notice available to these workers.
A bill to amend the City Charter and Administrative Code to designate the Department of Consumer Affairs as the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, update references to the Offices of the Director of Consumer Affairs, the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearing and other agency nomenclature, and to extend a prohibition on third-party food delivery service charges to certain food service establishments for telephone orders that did not result in a transaction during the call.
This law would prohibit encomienda grants and the transfer of encomienda land by will, effective upon the death of the individual encomendero. Previously, the encomienda grant would continue to pass through inheritance until a family member or other person claimed the property in a probate action. This bill also would prohibit encomienda owners from charging a fee for services provided by a third party to the encomienda owner’s employee.
A law to prohibit street vending in the Dyker Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, bounded on the west by 10th Avenue and on the south by 86th Street and on the east by 13th Avenue. The bill would establish that all pushcarts must be operated by a licensed street vendor, and it would require that the operator of a pushcart have a supervisory license to monitor the cart for violations.
Law new is a concept that is important for all firms to understand. It allows them to use a number of different techniques to help clients without affecting the primary focus of their law practice and it is an area of the industry that is going to grow. It is a field that all firms should explore and consider using to their advantage.
